The Barbican: 50 years of Bond
- Shaken Not Stirred at The Barbican
To commemorate a half century of all things Bond, The Barbican events centre hosted a celebratory exhibition Designing 007; 50 Years of Bond Style in honour of one of the world’s most timeless and revered protagonists.
In 1962, Ian Fleming’s impeccable secret service agent James Bond first graced our screens in flawless black tie overcoming the evil Dr. No on an island in Jamaica. The role fell to none other than Sir Sean Connery and was the first of his seven forays into depicting the life of James Bond.
Two years later, Connery travelled to Switzerland to shoot Goldfinger and journeyed to the idyllic town of Andermatt to film an iconic shoot out at the local petrol station which is still in existence. Traces of this momentous film are still influencing the town today with Bond themed snow shoe hikes on offer throughout the winter season and the perfectly preserved garage a constant reminder of the town’s star studded past.
As Andermatt readies itself for the grand opening of The Chedi Andermatt next year one can almost picture Connery relaxing with a martini in one of its many lofty lounges or impressing his latest conquest with the superlative spa. Perhaps 007 had already earmarked this rather special alpine town for great things when he visited almost 50 years ago.
At The Barbican, everything from early conception sketches to a whole host of Q’s weird and wonderful gadgetry were displayed for just under nine weeks at the unique exhibition which showcased the inside story of the design and style of the world’s most influential and iconic movie brand. The sparkling Golden Gun dazzled from within its glass casing, Halle Berry’s sensational La Perla bikini evoked memories of that iconic sea scene and Sean Connery’s Gieves and Hawkes and Henry Poole suits screamed sophistication of the highest kind.
To top it all off was a martini bar serving recreations of the famous cocktails that Flemings himself would have been proud of.
Skyfall, the 23rd Bond film is out on 26th October with Daniel Craig taking the lead role supplement by a cast of other eminent actors.
