Skiing in the Swiss Alps
With the winter months fast approaching and the first snow fall at Andermatt things are gearing up here in the village for the 2012/13 winter season.
For centuries The Swiss Alps has been a destination for excellent skiing and snowboarding, but few resorts can claim to have hosted and inspired not one but two world-class champion skiers namely Lara Gut and Andermatt resident Bernhard Russi. Russi has been heavily involved in the development in Andermatt from the very beginning, and will be involved in the design of the new ski runs between Andermatt and Sedrun, utilising his skills and knowledge.
Known for extreme off-piste skiing and excellent snowfall Andermatt Swiss Alps is well positioned in the heart of the Swiss Alps and is the perfect valley for all winter sports. Most recently the village celebrated the pioneering ski expansion with neighboring Sedrun, which will further develop the destination into an all round skiing and snowboarding mecca.
When speaking on the ski expansion partnership between European ski operator SkiStar and Orascom Development holding Gerhard Niesslein (Orascom CEO) expressed his ‘delight to be collaborating with SkiStar whose extensive experience and knowledge will prove invaluable’. On completion the ski expansion will increase skiable terrain to 120km of slopes. One of the first to try out the new terrain we are sure will be champion skier and Andermatt ambassador Lara Gut.
Gut competed in her first race at age 15, winning silver. In the same year she became Swiss national champion making her the 2nd youngest champion of all time. Since her first win Guts career has continued to hit new heights, which include earning four podiums just one year after missing out on a place at the Vancouver Winter Olympics due to injury. Gut is known as an Alpine Skier, having started her career skiing in the Swiss Alps. Gut expressed her excitement for the ski expansion “whether for training or in my spare time, I enjoy going back to the Gotthard region and am so excited for the partnership.”
