Behind the scenes… at the Chedi Andermatt

Less than a year stands between us and the opening of the five-star Chedi Andermatt hotel and residences: the latest Chedi in Europe, and Andermatt Swiss Alps‘ flagship property.

In this video, Andermatt Swiss Alps takes you behind the scenes for an exclusive look at this impressive construction project.

Building a hotel that will set new standards not just in Switzerland but across Europe requires the utmost attention to detail, and the hotel’s public areas – restaurant, lobby, spa -which are now taking shape, will provide glowing examples of the time and meticulous attention paid to the project by the fleet of designers, workmen and of course architect, Jean Michel Gathy.

For a sense of how the hotel will look once completed, read our comprehensive post, here.

Why are you destroying the village architecture, and you are growing the village in an excessive the size of the village removing its traditional charm.
Two size-medium hotels and some flats are good to revive the economy of the little village but this development is very excessive, this contributes to the impoverishment of the swiss traditional culture.
In the UK we think that this construction development is killing the image of Andermatt in an international context. I went to Andermatt two years ago and my group and me ell in love with the village architecture.
Finally I´m not against of the development, but many people that was involved in this project and left, think that the size was exaggerate and was very ugly.
    I will expect an answer
    Thank you

      Dear Samuel,

We are writing to you in response to the comment you left on our blog the Making of Andermatt. We are saddened to hear your thoughts and do understand some of your concerns. Nevertheless we wanted to take this opportunity to explain some of the initiatives that we have put in place to address these concerns. The project is a long-term commitment to the village, the canton and the Gotthard Region and we are doing everything to grow the village in a responsible and appropriate way. This includes creating the right balance and cohesion between hotel guests, property owners and the existing community.

Andermatt is a charming village and does embody the essence and beauty of Switzerland, like you say. Our aim is only to enhance the existing village further, through sensitive architecture and design. Since the Swiss Army moved out, the village as we are sure you’re aware, has suffered from the lack of trade and the population of the village has dwindled as a direct result. With the influx of new hotels, apartments and facilities, which the Andermatt Swiss Alps project brings, visitors will once again be drawn back to the village. From an environmental perspective we feel it important to mention that, as developers it is very important that all our apartments, chalets and hotels are built in a sustainable manner. To ensure that all construction is environmentally friendly all buildings will be built to the MINERGIE® standard, a registered Swiss quality label for new and refurbished low-energy consumption buildings. The resort will also be car free ensuring that carbon emissions are kept as low as possible and the entire resort will be carbon neutral.

The Andermatt Swiss Alps project presents a multitude of possibilities for the local community and region. Building work could not have begun at Andermatt had we not received over 90% support from the local community. We also hold monthly meetings with government authourities and have a very open dialogue with the population of the Ureseren Valley four times a year.

We hope within the above comments we have gone someway to dispel your negative opinion of the Andermatt Swiss Alps project and would like to extend an invitation to visit us next time that you are in the area – our Sales & Info Cente in Andermatt would be pleased to welcome you.

In the meantime please do let us know if you have any other questions.

      Kind regards
      Your Andermatt Swiss Alps-Team
