How to Spend Autumn in Zurich

Autumn has arrived and there’s no better base from which to explore this season than Andermatt.  Just over 1.5 hours from Zurich city centre, and its autumn offerings, staying in Andermatt enables you to enjoy the city’s cultural activities by day or night, and be back at home among the mountains in no time. To provide you with a little seasonal inspiration we’ve collated a few of our not-to-be-missed activities for Autumn 2013.

Zurich Oktoberfest 11th October – 9th November

For those fond of the traditional beer festival, you will not be disappointed this season. Zurich’s Oktoberfest starts 11th October and is an event not to be missed.

A tradition since 1995, Zurich plays host to over 40,000 revelers over this period, with an astonishing 80,000 litres of beer being drunk and 1.7 tonnes of sauerkraut being consumed. The tent, which is decorated in the traditional Bavarian colours, is open daily from 11.00 AM for music and merriment. To see images from last year’s festival check out their gallery pages.

Another well know beer festival is in in Altdorf. In attendance at this year’s Altdorf festival was the Wetterschmöker (weather prophet). A Swiss tradition, he is an old farmer from central Switzerland who can predict next year’s winter weather through reading signs in nature.
